New Canaan Students Show Art Through Their Eyes

Henry Eschricht uses his eyes to find the right teammate to pass to while on the ice. But those eyes, relied upon by the New Canaan High School hockey team in its push for a state championship, are also pretty good at capturing a sunrise from his grandparents’ house in Lake Placid, N.Y.

“Photography is my passion on the side,” said Eschricht, 18, a senior. “Photography is very fun. It’s whatever you want to do with it personally.”

Eschricht’s photography and other artwork from New Canaan High students will be on display this week as part of the Through Our Eyes exhibition at the Carriage Barn Art Center in Waveny Park. The student art gallery opened Sunday and will run through Thursday.

New Canaan High photography teacher Jeanne McDonagh said the invitational exhibit reflects the works of advanced art students. She said it’s nice for students to have the chance to show their work in a venue where more people can see them.

“Sharing the work with the community allows all to see how the students visualize their ideas, how they explore, experiment and ignite their inner spark to create their own personal voice,” McDonagh said. “I work to make them work and this exhibition is a sample of what we do all the time in our classrooms.”

Zack Zannini, 18, plans to study photography when he goes to college. He likes that Through Our Eyes is an open show that lets students show their creativity without any constraints. “You’re not trying to impress anyone,” he said, adding that being a photographer makes him look at the world though different eyes.

Cameron Lancaster, 16, a junior, says photography can be used in so many different aspects of work and life. “And girls like photos, too,” he said.

Eschricht says his hockey teammates joked about his shutterbug fascination. But now many of them mug for the camera when he shoots pictures at hockey practices for a year-end slideshow. “All the guys are posing on the ice,” he said.
