Two teams from New Canaan High School won gold medals recently at a Junior Engineering Technical Society competition at the University of New Haven.
The Rams varsity 'A' team placed first in its division and scored the highest in the state. The varsity 'B' team placed third in its division, and the junior varsity team placed first in its division. The teams are coached by Paul Reid and Jeff Hague.
The annual high school competition challenges students to work collaboratively and apply their math and science knowledge to solve everyday engineering problems.
Teams from high schools all over the nation take part in a paper and pencil competition focusing on a particular theme. This year's theme was Smarter Energy, Cleaner Planet. Results from the national portion of the competition will not be available for a few weeks.
The team members are: varsity 'A' team -- Izzy Meckler, captain, Kimmy Glerum, Brant Hoffman, Stas Kurtukov, Peter Larson, Kate O' Hanlon, Evan Shapiro and Ben Stryker; varsity 'B' team -- Matt Brady, captain, Ben Charas, Nelson Conover, Jake Hennessy, Alexandra Jonker, Taylor Parsons, Portia Schultz and Nick Zeiss; junior varsity -- Quinn Gruver, captain, Harrison Besser, Jessica Laird, Olivia Hompe, John O'Rourke, William Burger, Dichen Yin and Jack Alexander.
