Superintendent Mary Kolek said the district should be able to have classes as normal on Tuesday. It was not the case on Monday, she said, because nearly half of the district’s bus drivers and some of the building staff live in areas of Fairfield County still digging out from the major snowstorm.
Kolek said she received emails from several parents who wondered why New Canaan schools were closed while other lower Fairfield County districts were open as normal or had a delay.
“Unfortunately, given the circumstances, we were not able to get out,” she said, calling the circumstances “highly unusual.”
New Canaan has now lost nine school days this academic year because of inclement weather, six of them following Hurricane Sandy in October. Because of the closings, the first two days of the planned April vacation break, April 15 and 16, are now school days. The school year will end on June 21.
