The school board voted Monday to create an enrollment and capacity committee to look into possible solutions for the anticipated enrollment growth.
“We need to establish plans. If we need to increase (capacity), we need to be ready to go forward," school board Chairwoman Alison Bedula said. The committee will include school board members as well as parents and town government officials. “We know we have a potential issue with capacity. It’s a matter of us being proactive,” Bedula said.
The biggest question is what should be done after many of the children currently attending the town’s three elementary schools enter Saxe Middle School.
The committee is expected to discuss whether to add portable classrooms, reschedule school days or reallocate space in the building. The district does not plan to move fifth grade back to the elementary schools, Bedula said, although that was the plan when fifth-graders were moved there years ago. She also does not expect the district to add another wing to Saxe, which was built in 1957.
Some students from South School recently transferred to East School because of overcrowding concerns.
