NEW CANAAN, Conn. New Canaan Public Schools will ask for $1.9 million more to run the school district in the 2012-13 fiscal year.
Superintendent David Abbey unveiled a $74.9 million spending plan for the next school year. It is 2.5 percent higher than the $73.1 million budget the district is currently working under. The Board of Education voted Monday to approve a first reading of the budget.
We certainly had in mind to try and be as fiscally prudent as possible, Abbey said. But the No. 1 goal is to present a budget thats in the best interest of our students.
Salaries once again make up the bulk of the budget, accounting for more than $51.1 million. Benefits for teachers and other school staff comprise $11.2 million.
The spending requests do not include spending $150,000 on a world language lab for Saxe Middle School or $475,000 to add new seats and lighting in the Saxe auditorium. Abbey said that had the economic climate been better, he might have considered requesting those projects. The district will also hold off on a $60,000 plan to modernize district records.
The school board is expected to review Abbeys proposal over the next two weeks and approve a budget Jan. 23.
