New Canaan Schools Add Classes on April 9

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – In an effort to recapture a snow day lost to Hurricane Irene, the New Canaan Board of Education will make a professional development day for teachers into a school day.

The school board voted unanimously Monday to make April 9 a school day. The teachers will now have their professional development session on the day after the final day of classes, which is June 19.

Under the new calendar, if the district needs to use one more snow day, the school year would conclude June 20. If two more days were needed, the final day for the 2011-12 school year would be June 21. A third day would have the final day of classes June 22. The only way school officials would explore taking days off of the April spring break would be if more than five additional days were used, Superintendent David Abbey said. Under district rules, the school year cannot end after the third full week of June.

Abbey said the decision was made after hearing from parents and teachers. Vivian Birdsall, president of the New Canaan Education Association, thanked the board for considering the opinions of teachers in making its decision.

School officials had to make adjustments to the schedule after Hurricane Irene delayed the start of the school year by four days because of widespread power outages.
