New Canaan Principal Heading to Alma Mater

New Canaan High School principal Tony Pavia is not retiring after all — he’s going home.

Pavia announced Thursday that he will take over as principal at Trinity Catholic High School in Stamford at the start of the 2011-12 school year. Pavia announced in November that he was retiring from New Canaan High at the end of the current school year, though he indicated that he would consider other opportunities. Pavia graduated from Trinity Catholic in 1972 when the school was known as Stamford Catholic High School.

In a letter to students, Pavia said he was going back to help his alma mater, which has had its share of adversity. Former principal Robert D’Aquila, 56, died last July. A month earlier, assistant principal Kevin Sutton, 38, died of cancer.

“It is now time for me to repay a debt and give back to the school that did so much for me,” Pavia said in his letter. “This is not a decision simply to continue working. It is a special opportunity for me to give back to a place that has played such an important part in my life.”

Pavia credited the teachers at Trinity Catholic for helping pull him through rough patches as a student, adding that his decision to become a high school teacher was based in large part on his desire to help others as the Trinity teachers had helped him.

Many New Canaan High students and parents have spoken highly of Pavia for his work with students and outreach to the community. A search committee is still looking for Pavia’s successor. New Canaan Schools officials are hoping to find a new principal by April.
