NEW CANAAN, Conn.  – Hurricanes and early snowstorms have the New Canaan Board of Education considering changes to the 2013-14 school year.

School Board Chair Alison Bedula said last week that the board will likely talk about amending next year’s already approved schedule to offer district administrators more flexibility should more bad weather force earlier than expected closures.

New Canaan Schools had to close for six days last October and November after Hurricane Sandy. Six days were lost early in the 2011-12 school year due to Hurricane Irene in late August and a freak October snowstorm.

Of course, New Canaan residents are worried about the scheduling. The New Canaan Daily Voice reader Debra Dunbar said she thinks the school year could wrap up beyond the third week of June.

“End it later,” she said on The Daily Voice's Facebook page.

Fellow reader Sarah Goff Copper said she thinks things could work better with a few more classroom hours.

“How about the kids stay in school for an hour more a day instead of getting out so early,” she said on Facebook. “This way they could start after Labor Day and end in the middle of June. The current schedule is crazy!”

Bedula said all options would be on the table for discussion, including the February and April vacations, non-federal school holidays and when to start and end the school year.
