The New Canaan Board of Education this week reviewed a possible amendment to the calendar, featuring changes to accommodate for more snow days.
The proposed new calendar, which has the school year concluding June 21, four days later than originally scheduled, makes Feb. 15 a half-day for the district, allowing New Canaan to have 181 instructional days, one more than required by state officials. The second half of that day would be used for professional development. If school needs to be cancelled again, the district would have a 180-day school year.
Should the district need additional days because of inclement weather, the April vacation could be used for classes. The entire vacation week would be lost if six more days are lost to snow or other bad weather. If seven or more snow days are needed, New Canaan could have classes in the fourth week of June, something that typically does not happen.
New Canaan schools were closed for six days because of Hurricane Sandy, which knocked power out for most residents and caused many roads to be closed because of downed trees and power lines.
The proposed adjusted calendar will be available on the district’s website for review and is expected to be discussed at the school board’s Dec. 3 meeting.
