Attila Levai loves pie. He also has a fondness for pi. Its not a surprise that the longtime math teacher at New Canaan High School indulged in and celebrated Pi Day, an annual treat for mathematicians who love the decimal representation that never ends or repeats.
Pi is a number that occurs in so many places, he said. The symbol also appears frequently in Levais classroom on the third floor at New Canaan High, along with other quirky math-related images and items as well as posters expressing his devotion to the New York Yankees.
While Levai and others in the math department commemorated Pi Day last Friday because most students were occupied with state exams Monday, Levai recognized the official day Monday in his classroom, complete with listening to Pi Day songs posted on YouTube.
Levai, 61, says Pi Day is a good way to show people how math plays a role in how the world works. Its just to show students that mathematics is all over the place, he said.
Fridays celebration included several different flavors of pie, including his beloved pecan. But Levai did not indulge in even a slice, preferring to stay true to his diet. I was good, he said. Not even the crumbs off of a knife.
