NEW CANAAN, Conn. Henry Cannon enjoyed his summer. But now hes ready to put trips to the beach and long, hot days behind him and get back into the swing of school.
Im excited because I get to learn stuff and I get to see my friends, the 8-year-old East Elementary School third-grader said as he joined classmate Bates Grigsby to get copies of a handout at the principals office. And I get to play the violin. The more you play it, the better you get at it.
Learning new things was one of the reasons so many East pupils were happy to start the new school year.
Tuesdays rain failed to dampen the spirits of the kids who hopped out of school buses and their parents cars to the waves of an excited group of teaches, aides and other parents.
East Principal Alexandra Potts said the first day went off without a hitch. From all she saw, students and teachers alike were excited to start the year after a long summer and having school delayed four days in the wake of Hurricane Irene. The resumption of classes offered a sense of normalcy since some homes were without power for nearly a week or lost power again after storms early Tuesday morning, she said.
Anytime you start something new, theres a great mix of excitement and nervousness, Potts said. You want to get going.
Delaney Koval, 5, was a little shy about finally going to kindergarten but looking forward to riding the bus by herself. Kindergarten kids came to school with their parents on Tuesday, but will go it alone on Wednesday.
Its super exciting, Elaine said, hugging her father, Jay Koval.
