New Canaan Is No. 1 on Some Test Scores

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – New Canaan Public Schools students topped all districts in the state in several categories of the mastery tests for grades three through eight. And Superintendent David Abbey was feeling pleased.

The state Department of Education unveiled the 2011 Connecticut Mastery Test results on Wednesday.

Fifth graders scored well in the science exam. The average score was 307.4 and more than 91 percent were at or above state goals. In addition, 98 percent of the fifth graders were at or above state proficiency guidelines.

Eighth graders had an average score of 295.7 in science and more than 93 percent were at or above goal, while more than 97 percent scored at or above proficiency. Abbey pointed out that the fifth and eighth graders had the highest at or above goal percentage off all districts.

Scores for younger test takers were also favorable. With an average score of 277, almost 91 percent were at or above goal and 95.5 percent were at or above proficiency. Fourth graders had an average score of 295 on the reading test and more than 92 percent were at or above goal, while 95 percent were at or above proficiency.

Reading scores for third graders were the best in the state, Abbey said. He said it’s a good sign that students are literate early on, which shows that they’re on the right  track. “It shows us if they’re getting off on the right foot,” Abbey said. “Our scores continue to be strong in those areas.”

Abbey added that he’s pleased with how New Canaan students have tested over several years of the mastery exams, especially compared with districts like Darien, Westport, Weston and Wilton.

“The bottom line is we’ve very pleased,” Abbey said, though he said he and other administrators will continue pouring over the results in the weeks before classes resume. “We look for consistency and early literacy and we look at areas where we have strength and where we need improvements,” he said.
