NEW CANAAN, Conn. A tradition of strong scores on college entrance exams continued with New Canaan High Schools Class of 2011.
The high school's most recent graduates registered mean scores of 589 on the reading portion of the exam, 608 for the math section and 597 on the writing portion. About 94 percent of New Canaan Highs 2011 seniors took the SAT, Deputy Superintendent Mary Kolek said Thursday.
Its not an anomaly, she said. It speaks to the strength of the academic program. The SAT performance is consistent with previous results, Kolek said. The 2010 senior class registered mean scores of 585 for reading, 610 for math and 601 for writing. The 135 students who took the ACT exam registered a 25.4 average.
Kolek said the SAT results coupled with students strong performance in the classroom shows that students are committed to being successful. The students want to go on to university studies and they take a very strong level of classes, she said. They work hard and they get good grades.
Kolek adds that the scores reflect well on the teachers and show how the New Canaan community cares about education. Although she did not compare New Canaan scores with other districts, Kolek said shes certain they are in the upper echelon of schools in the state.
While one test can never represent the comprehensive and complex nature of our students achievements, we are always gratified when standardized test performance is reflective what we experience in our classrooms daily high levels of commitment on the part of our study body to pursuing a rigorous program of studies and highly expert and effective instruction on the part of our teachers, Kolek said.
