For nearly a minute at 9:30 a.m., students and school staff paused in silence tribute to those killed in the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Some students bowed their heads while others quietly looked in front of them to ponder what happened.
“We stand with them during this difficult time,” said Principal Bryan Luizzi.
Andrea Monterrosa, 15, a sophomore, said it was good for the school to remember the children and adults in Newtown. “I think it’s so extremely depressing that something like that can happen,” said Monterrosa, who has a cousin who knew Sandy Hook teacher Vicki Soto. “I still can’t believe it after all these days.”
Senior Kyle Conner, 17, said it was important to stop, especially with New Canaan being so close to Newtown. “We have relatives and friends in Newtown,” said Conner, whose best friend has a cousin who was shot at Sandy Hook. Conner said it’s “scary” to think someone would want to harm children in an elementary school.
