Former New Canaan Administrator Takes Massachusetts Job

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Former New Canaan Public Schools math coordinator Mary Coakley will become the new assistant principal at the Millbury Street Elementary School in Grafton, Mass.

Coakley will be replacing Ron Tomlin, who had served as assistant principal under Principal Joanne Stocklin.

Grafton Superintendent of Schools James Cummings said Coakley is a former Grafton resident who was active within the Grafton Public Schools as a parent volunteer before she moved out of state.

"We are very excited to have Mary moving back to this area and bringing her well-developed leadership skills, her knowledge of elementary instruction and a positive and proactive approach to the Grafton Public Schools," Cummings said.

According to the New Canaan Public Schools central office, Coakley worked as a K-8 math coordinator in the district for more than a year before leaving in November of 2000. She worked as a teacher at South School from 1992 to 1995 and was an assistant principal at South from 1995 to 1999.

Coakley has earned a bachelor’s degree from Florida Southern College, a master’s degree from Long Island University and is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Massachusetts.

She starts in her new position at the Millbury Street Elementary School on July 23.
