Luizzi Is Ready To Roll at New Canaan High

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – It’s almost show time for Bryan Luizzi. Since the beginning of July, the new principal of New Canaan High School has moved into his new office, although it’s still not completely decorated. His desk’s nameplate is closer to his office wall, not easy for visitors to see.

But he just about ready for when school reopens Aug. 30. “We are very, very close. I think we’re in great shape,” said Luizzi, in a good mood as he gets accustomed to his new surroundings.

Luizzi, hired last April to take over for the departed Tony Pavia, has spent most of his first four weeks meeting his staff and learning the school's layout. “I walk through the building at least once a day. It’s a very nice building,” he said. “It’s very impressive.”

He’s also received personal greetings from parents and some students, wishing him luck before the start of the year. “I met with three students and all of them are looking forward to starting school,” Luizzi said. Although that might seem weird to some, Luizzi said that around this time of year, students have had their fill of summer and are ready to get back in the classroom. “They’re so engaged in their school,” he said.

All the planning has been great and Luizzi said he has enjoyed hearing how invested New Canaan is in the education of its children. He is transitioning to the new school after five years of running Brookfield High School.

For Luizzi, though, the best part of his job begins Aug. 30, when he and the staff greet the 1,350 students making up the student body at New Canaan High for 2011-12. “The fun work is when school is in session,” he said. “I think this will be a great year.”
