LeDuc Excited To Start New Year at New Canaan High

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – A career in education was far from Veronica LeDuc’s mind in 1979. But the new assistant principal at New Canaan High School could not imagine doing anything else now.

Back then, before she had any thoughts about being in front of the classroom, LeDuc studied chemistry in college and was working in cancer research. One day, while she was at home tending to her young family, LeDuc was asked about substitute teaching at her alma mater, Notre Dame Academy in Waterbury.

“I went in and said I’d do what I can and I absolutely loved it,” LeDuc said. “I never looked back after that.” Since then, LeDuc moved from teaching to serving as an assistant principal at Thomaston and Torrington high schools for 13 years. She will return to the administrative ranks at New Canaan after three years as a chemistry teacher at Brookfield High School, where she worked under Bryan Luizzi, the new principal at New Canaan High.

LeDuc said her previous work with Luizzi and the chance to return to the administrative side made the New Canaan job “a great opportunity.”

“I love to work with kids (and) in a year you work with 125 kids,” she said. “But when you work with teachers in a collaborative way, you get to have an effect on even more kids. I wanted to get back (into administration) because I missed that.”

LeDuc officially begins work Monday, but she was busy the week before setting up her office and getting ready to go when classes begin in late August.  “This is the most welcoming place I’ve ever been,” LeDuc said. “People have dropped by to see if I need any help. It’s been a wonderful experience.” The anticipation will rise, she said, as the first day of classes inches closer.

LeDuc has met with some New Canaan High students taking part in summer activities. “They’ve been welcoming and pleasant and they’re very proud of the school,” she said.
