Earl Cancels After-School Activities

The threat of heavy rain and wind from Hurricane Earl has led to the cancellation of after-school activities Friday for all New Canaan schools, New Canaan Superintendent David Abbey announced Thursday.

The school day is expected to proceed normally Friday, though Abbey said the district was still monitoring the storm. Most forecasts are projecting the hurricane will stay well east of Connecticut as it reaches the Northeast on Friday.

Even with the more optimistic forecast, Abbey said he did not want children, particularly New Canaan High School students with vehicles, traveling home in potentially dangerous weather, especially with the possibility of downed power lines.

"We didn't need to take the risk," Abbey said. "These things [storms] can change quickly." Abbey said he will monitor the weather throughout Friday to determine whether the district should send students home early or take other action.
