NEW CANAAN, Conn. — Jill Correnty, former principal of New Canaan’s West Elementary School, is officially the district’s assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction after “interim” was dropped from her title Friday, the district announced.

Correnty was appointed the interim assistant superintendent last September. Before that, she had been principal of West School since 2005.

“Since assuming the principalship of West School in 2005, Jill has not only demonstrated highly effective instructional leadership but has also made significant contributions to the overall district program,” Superintendent Mary Kolek said in a districtwide email Friday.

“She has a background in literacy and is certified in special education,” Kolek continued. “Jill has been a key contributor to the development of professional learning community practices, serving such initiatives as response to intervention and teacher evaluation and professional growth.”

Now that Correnty's role has been made permanent, the district will initiate the search for a permanent principal of West School. On Thursday, it was announced that acting principal Joanne LaVista will retire effective June 30.

The search and selection process for a new principal will be led by the district’s director of human resources, Gary Kass, and will include a representative interview committee. Input from the West School community and the entire school district will be sought throughout the process.

LaVista has enjoyed a 34-year career with the district, starting out in 1980 as a teacher at New Canaan’s Center School.

She later went on to teach at Saxe and West schools before she was promoted to assistant principal of West in 2001. She became the school’s acting principal last September after then-principal Correnty was appointed interim assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.

“With a career spanning 34 years, one of the most wonderful experiences I have had is seeing my former students as parents and being involved in the education of their children," LaVista wrote in a letter to parents. “I have always felt fortunate to be connected to such a special community of learners, educators and families."
