New Canaan Rep. Tom O'Dea Supports Gun Bill

NEW CANAAN, Conn. — State Rep. Tom O’Dea, a Republican from New Canaan and Wilton, supported the gun bill that came from the Sandy Hook legislative task force and was passed early Thursday by state legislators, a statement from his office said.

“I voted for the bill because I believe it will enhance public safety. Specifically, this legislation includes provisions on mental health treatment, school security and the elimination of early release credits for violent offenders,” O’Dea, R-125 District, said in the statement.

He went on to say he does not think the legislation passed was perfect but said the positives outweighed the negatives, and that he and others unsuccessfully tried to amend the bill, the statement said. O'Dea also said the new bill will allow current gun owners to keep their semiautomatic firearms and large-capacity magazines.

“Gun owners will still be able to keep their current guns and magazines, and there will be minimal impact on the types of guns and magazines future gun enthusiasts will be able to buy in Connecticut,” O’Dea said.
