Murphy, McMahon Win State; Shays Takes New Canaan

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – New Canaan's Democratic voters followed Connecticut in choosing U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy in Tuesday's Senate primary but bucked the state trend in picking Chris Shays over statewide winner Linda McMahon.

While final state results weren't in late Tuesday night, Shays received 986 votes to 750 for McMahon, the 2010 GOP candidate and former World Wrestling Entertainment CEO. Murphy received 322 votes, compared to the 67 votes for former Connecticut Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz.

The state vote went the way New Canaan resident Chuck Gulden, 50, preferred as he cast a ballot for McMahon at Saxe Middle School. “I think she will have a different viewpoint,” said Gulden, who said he feels that Shays has been in government for too many years. “He’s been there too long. It’s more of the same."

Gulden said he also wants to sweep everyone in office out and start over with new leadership.

Daniel Welch, 40, of New Canaan also voted in the GOP primary. While he did not reveal his choice, Welch said he wanted someone who represented the Republican Party’s values and who will work on issues important to Connecticut, including how to create jobs.

“We’ve had a lot of jobs leave in the last 10 years,” Welch said, noting he wants to find a way to make the state more attractive to businesses.
