Jeb Walker's New Canaan Pension To Be Recalculated

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – The pension of former New Canaan First Selectman Jeb Walker will be recalculated.

First Selectman Robert Mallozzi III announced at Tuesday’s Board of Selectmen meeting that the pension will be adjusted. Mallozzi said the town will stop making excess payments after a review is completed in September.

Mallozzi said he doesn’t know what the new rate will be. The recalculation was called for by Walker in a recent letter published in a local newspaper and Mallozzi said it’s a town function to ask for it.  Walker, who served four years in the town’s top job, had been receiving a pension of about $944 a month since leaving office late last year.

Concerns about the pension program surfaced recently after the Board of Finance and Town Council voted in July to allow town elected officials beginning in office on or before January 1, 2010 to receive pensions after four years of service. Previously, they had to be in office for five years to be eligible.

“Clearly it looks like for some reason he (Walker) received more benefits than what the document says he deserved,” Mallozzi said, noting that there will have to be a discussion on whether the excess dollars already paid back should be returned.  “I think the town is entitled to look into the possibility of getting that money back,” Mallozzi said.

Mallozzi said he has talked with five firms about conducting a review of town practices in light of the pension votes. He has yet to choose a firm, which has to be approved by the Board of Selectmen.
