New Canaan Police say they were dispatched to Waveny Park (677 South Avenue) on a report of a male that was sleeping in the driver’s seat of a vehicle with the engine running on Sunday, Aug. 11 around 6:30 p.m.

Upon arrival, officers say they tried to make contact with the driver but were initially unsuccessful. Eventually, they were able to wake the driver, identified as Christopher Parent, 31, of Westport, by reaching through an open window and shaking his shoulder, according to police.

Police say they detected signs of impairment in Parent as well as the odor of alcohol and burnt marijuana coming from the vehicle.

Parent was subsequently asked to perform a series of field sobriety tests, which police say he did not pass.

A search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, police say.

Parent was arrested and ticketed for possession of less than a half-ounce of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Police say his blood alcohol content was tested at .14, prompting an additional charge for illegal operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drugs.

Parent was released after posting a $260 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, Aug. 20.
