The rescue took place around 6:45 a.m., Saturday, July 11, when New Canaan Police officers responded to the New Canaan Post Office for a report of a suspicious box on the landing dock.

But instead of a dangerous item, responding officers found the new kittens in a Calvin Klein shoebox, said New Canaan  Police Lt. Jason Ferraro.

Due to the intense care required by newborn kittens, the little ones were taken to PAWS in Norwalk, Ferraro said.

On the downside, abandoning any animal is a crime and this is an ongoing investigation, he added.
