Woman Charged With Stealing From New Canaan Antiques Shop

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – After being confronted by a store employee while trying to steal a crystal box, a woman from Rye, N.Y., is facing a larceny charge, New Canaan police said.

A 76-year-old employee of Sallea Antiques on Elm Street reported that a woman had shoplifted from the store Saturday, police said. The employee confronted Sarah B. Mitchell, 58, who confessed to taking a round, crystal box with a silver top valued at about $200, police said. The box was returned, police said.

The employee followed Mitchell to her car and waited until police arrived. Through Mitchell’s car window, officers said they noticed several bags filled with clothing, small plates and silver platters. Mitchell initially said she had purchased some of the items but later confessed to taking them, police said. The items may have been stolen earlier in the week from stores in White Plains, N.Y., police said.

Mitchell was charged with sixth-degree larceny, a misdemeanor, and was released on a promise to appear Aug. 27 in Norwalk Superior Court.
