He will start at the Connecticut Municipal Police Academy on July 3 and is expected to graduate in December, a release from the department said. Callinan will then have to complete to a 12-week Field Training Program before patrolling on his own, the release said.

He was sworn in on Thursday.

Callinan was chosen from among 186 candidates who took a written examination and a physical agility test last August, the release said. He also went through several interviews, a polygraph test and a thorough background check as part of the hiring process.

“The police department has high expectations for Officer Callinan and we welcome him to the New Canaan Police Department,” the release said.

Before joining the police department, the 25-year-old resident of Carmel, N.Y., worked for Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union as a financial services representative, the release said. Callinan has a bachelor’s degree in business economics from the State University of New York at Cortland.
