The first locally based program of its kind in the state, New Canaan Police Chief Leon Krolikowski is leading the program, along with a psychiatrist who will teach the minors caught with alcohol about the dangers of substance abuse, the story said.
The chief hopes to reduce the numbers cited by the state's Coalition to Stop Underage Drinking, which says high school students consume 1.1 billion cans of beer annually, added the newspaper.
The program would work by officers targeting minors they catch at parties or driving with alcohol and then referring them to receive the consulting instead of appearing in front of judge, the story said.
