New Canaan Police: James Owen Made 911 Call

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – James Owen was the man who called 911 last Friday to report a shooting at the condominium where he and his wife were found dead, New Canaan police said.

Sgt. Carol Ogrinc confirmed Thursday that Owen, 48, made the nine-second call to police on a cellphone. On the call, Owen tells a dispatcher “131 Park Street, shots fired” and nothing else. The dispatcher tried calling back but received no answer, Ogrinc said.

Owen shot and killed his wife, Billie Falgout-Owen, 52, before shooting himself last Friday afternoon at 131 Park St., one of four condominium units in a complex close to the New Canaan Post Office, police said. Police arrived at the condominium and found Owen and Falgout-Owen dead.

The state Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Falgout-Owen died of a gunshot to the head while Owen died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Police were not sure whether the call was made before or after Owen shot his wife.

Investigators were still speaking with family members and reviewing materials in the home, including a computer, Ogrinc said Wednesday.
