New Canaan Police: Call In Unfamiliar Cars

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – If you see an unfamiliar vehicle in your neighborhood, New Canaan Police Sgt. Carol Ogrinc wants you to call if you have any suspicions — especially on the heels of last Saturday’s home invasion in town.

“It takes us (a short time) to run a plate,” said Ogrinc. “If you see an unfamiliar car, call us. If it ends up being legitimate, that’s OK.”

Residents sometimes don't take a moment to report a vehicle because they may not want to bother the officers, Ogrinc said. But she hopes that does not dissuade people if there is cause for worry. Even if you don’t immediately call it in, Ogrinc said residents should jot down a license plate number and report it later.

The men who entered the Ponus Ridge home last Saturday stole about $14,000 in silverware and $200 from the home, police said. The thieves, dressed in all black, tied up a 52-year-old resident and left after 20 minutes when they realized police were on their way.

A member of the man’s family called 911 inside the home, police said, but did not indicate who the relative was. The man did not see any weapons but said he felt a metal object against his head while his arms and legs were being bound by rope, police said.

The intruders are described as 5 feet, 9 inches to 5 feet, 10 inches tall with stocky builds.
