NEW CANAAN, N.Y. – After a high-speed chase that followed a hit-and-run accident on the Merritt Parkway, a Long Island man is facing multiple criminal charges, according to Stamford Advocate.

Nathaniel Collado, 33, of Pollock Street in Hicksville, was charged with evading responsibility, reckless driving, driving without insurance, improper use of a license plate and disregarding an officer's signal.

New Canaan officers were asked to assist state police after a black Nissan Altima with New York plates hit another vehicle on the parkway and left the scene shortly after 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, according to a police report.

While police were en route to the parkway, an officer saw a car matching the description of the suspect's vehicle traveling in the opposite direction on South Avenue, police said. Collado then turned back onto the parkway at southbound Exit 37, according to the report.

Police said the officer then turned around and activated his cruiser's emergency lights as he followed the suspect, but Collado did not stop. The driver then took Exit 36 toward Old Stamford Road and turned left on Jelliff Mill Road, where police said he "accelerated to an increased rate of speed" and the officer discontinued the pursuit.

Moments later, according to the report, a Ponus Ridge Road resident called police to report that a black car had pulled her into her driveway and the operator was still in the car. Officers arrived at the location to find Collado's car crashed into a stone wall on the woman's property, police said.
