New Canaan Man Scammed By 'Special Agent'

NEW CANAAN, Conn. — A New Canaan man was scammed out of almost $2,000 from a man reporting to be a federal agent, Sgt. Carol Ogrinc said.

According to Ogrinc here is what happened: The 44-year-old resident received a call at home from a person identifying himself as Special Agent William Wright of the Drug Enforcement Administration, and that the victim was suspected of buying prescription medication from the Dominican Republic. The “agent” also told the victim that there would be an arrest warrant signed if he did not pay a $1,950 fine.

The suspect told the victim to wire the money via Western Union to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Ogrinc said. The victim learned of the scam when he had tried to contact the agent and couldn’t, and then did an online search of the agent and found reports of a scam, the sergeant said.

The victim told police that he did do research on medication, but had never purchased anything online, Ogrinc said.

The Department of Justice’s Diversion Control bureau is investigating scams involving “Agent William Wright” and have set up a hotline for people with information, 1-877-792-2873, Ogrinc said.
