A man is facing charges after police say he tried to purchase an iPhone costing $1,100 at a store in New Canaan using a fake ID.

New Canaan Police say they responded to the Verizon Store located at 139 Elm Street on the report of a potentially fraudulent purchase in progress.

Further investigation revealed that the suspect, identified as 65-year-old Thomas Welborn of the Bronx, was allegedly trying to purchase an iPhone valued at $1,100 using another person’s account, according to police.

Police say Welborn had a fraudulent New Jersey driver’s license in his possession as well as a credit card with the same fake name.

Welborn was arrested, transported to headquarters and charged with the following:

  • Second-degree forgery
  • Third-degree identity theft
  • Fourth-degree criminal attempted larceny
  • Credit card theft

Welborn was held on $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, April 24.
