New Canaan police had obtained an arrest warrant for Drew Eccleston, 29, of Bridgeport after receiving complaints on March 28 and April 18 from two victims of identity theft.
The victims — who lost a total of $11,000 — were patients in a residential treatment facility where Eccleston worked, police said.
Eccleston used the stolen funds to make multiple online purchases from Amazon Marketplace and to open an account with Southern Connecticut Gas company for a home in Bridgeport, police said
On Tuesday, Aug. 1, Department of Homeland Security officials notified New Canaan police that Eccleston was listed on a passenger manifest for a flight to Barcelona, Spain, on Wednesday, Aug. 2, police said.
On Wednesday, he was taken into custody by authorities as he was attempting to board the flight, police said.
On Friday, New Canaan police traveled to JFK Airport to take custody of Eccleston and return him to Connecticut.
He was charged with two counts of third-degree larceny, first-degree identity theft and second-degree identity theft. Eccleston was held on $50,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court Monday.
