James Owen May Have Called 911 Before Shooting

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – James Owen apparently called 911 last Friday, the day he shot and killed his wife before shooting himself.

A man who called into the police’s emergency line called and said “131 Park Street, shots fired” and said nothing else to a dispatcher. Police released the nine-second recording to media outlets Wednesday

Sgt. Carol Ogrinc said police believe it is Owen, 48, on the call, but they still are checking to make sure. Ogrinc said it was unclear if the call was made before or after he shot Billie D. Falgout-Owen, 52, in their Park Street condominium.

Police arrived at the condominium and found Owen and Falgout-Owen dead. The state medical examiner’s office determined Falgout-Owen died of a gunshot to the head while Owen died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Police said Owen killed his wife before ending his own life.

Ogrinc said investigators still are speaking with family members and reviewing materials in the home, including a computer. The investigation could take several weeks or months, she said.
