NEW CANAAN, Conn. A 17-year-old Darien boy who was at the wheel of an SUV carrying other Darien teenagers last June when an accident occurred is facing reckless endangerment and motor vehicle charges from New Canaan police.
The teen is charged with four counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, a misdemeanor, reckless driving, possession of alcohol by a minor on a public street, violating motor vehicle passenger restrictions, transporting more passengers than available seatbelts and failure to obey a stop sign. Police did not release his name because of his age.
The boy was driving a Chevrolet Suburban at about 9:20 p.m. June 22 when he passed through a stop sign on Michigan Road, police said. The SUV hit a Mini Cooper being driven north on Smith Ridge Road by a 22-year-old man from Pound Ridge, N.Y., police said. The Suburban ended up on its roof but did not roll over, police said.
No serious injuries were reported. But police said the Suburban's driver, three of his passengers, the Mini Cooper driver and his passenger, a 27-year-old woman from South Salem, N.Y., were taken to Norwalk Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
The 17-year-old did not have alcohol in his system when he was driving, police said. The boy posted $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear Aug. 22 in Norwalk Superior Court.
