A burglar used force to enter a home on Snowberry Lane on Oct. 21, 2015, police said.
Officers processed the scene and were able to get a blood sample off a piece of broken glass and the door where the burglar forced entry, police said.
Nearly $32,000 worth of jewelry was taken from the home in the burglary, police said.
The blood samples were sent to the State Forensic Lab for processing shortly after the burglary.
On June 30, 2017, New Canaan police received a notification that the DNA in the blood had matched a suspect — Joseph Martinez, 27, of Bridgeport.
Martinez is currently incarcerated at the Willard-Cybulski Correctional Institution in Enfield, serving a seven-year prison sentence for narcotics sales and multiple counts of criminal weapons possession in a case out of Bridgeport.
On Tuesday, Martinez was transported to Norwalk Superior Court and charged with third-degree burglary and first-degree larceny.
He remains in custody on the conviction in the Bridgeport case.
