Police were dispatched to the area of Norwalk Road in New Canaan at around 8 p.m. on Friday on a report of an erratic driver who almost caused several head-on collisions. The person who called police also reported seeing several unrestrained children in the car, police said. Police stopped the car on Heritage Hill Road and spoke with the driver, 35-year-old John Vieira.
Upon speaking with Vieira, officers detected the odor of alcohol, according to police reports. Police said there were four kids in the car, ages 1, 3, 5 and 6 years old, none of whom were wearing seat belts or sitting in car seats.
Vieira failed a field sobriety test, and a breath test later revealed his blood alcohol content was .154. He was charged with driving under the influence and four counts of risk of injury to a minor. He posted a $2,750 and will appear in court May 3.
