Milford police responded to a home on Milford Point Road around 2:45 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24, after reports of an attempted car theft escalated into a home invasion. As officers arrived, they spotted a black BMW speeding away.

Responding officers deployed stop sticks near Milford Point Road and Deerwood Avenue, forcing the car to stop. The driver fled on foot, authorities said.

Back at the home, two suspects ran out the back door toward the beach. Police dog Rip, along with his handler and other officers, gave chase.

The first suspect, a juvenile, was apprehended by K9 Rip on the beach. Officers found stolen items, including cash and property belonging to the homeowner, in his possession.

He was taken to a juvenile detention center, where he was charged with multiple felonies, including burglary, larceny, and interfering with an officer, Milford police said. His name was not released because of his age.

Rip’s keen tracking skills led officers to the second suspect, identified as 19-year-old Jahquil Louis of Newark, New Jersey, police said.

As officers approached a marshy area, Rip's behavior intensified near a low boardwalk, leading them to Louis. Police repeatedly ordered him to come out, but Louis refused, authorities said.

That’s when Rip pulled him out.

Louis was charged with burglary, larceny, and interfering with an officer. He is being held on a $500,000 bond.

Both suspects were taken to Milford Hospital for treatment before being processed.
