William G. Freeman Jr., Former New Canaan Resident, Retired From Texaco

LAKE WALES, Fla. - William Goodell Freeman Jr. of Lake Wales, formerly of New Canaan, died Saturday, July 26. He was 84.

Freeman was born in Greenwich, to William Goodell Freeman and Mary Fahnestock Freeman, and attended Brunswick School through ninth grade. He graduated from Phillips Academy Andover in 1948, and received his bachelor's degree from Yale in 1952. He was a member of the Andover varsity ice hockey team and the Yale varsity lacrosse team. He was also the team manager for the 1951 to 1952 Yale men's ice hockey team that placed third in the final round of the NCAA championship tournament, now known as the Frozen Four. At Yale, he was a member of DKE fraternity and Wolf's Head, and served on the board of the Phelps Association for many years.

After graduating from Yale, he served in the U.S. Air Force, where he was discharged as a first lieutenant. He then began a long career with Texaco, working in several positions, including general manager of marketing for Europe. While with Texaco he lived with his family in Puerto Rico and Jamaica. After leaving the Caribbean in 1970, the family settled in New Canaan. Upon retiring from Texaco in 1988, he taught and coached ice hockey at Brunswick School for three years.

He was a member of the Country Club of New Canaan. He was a dedicated member of the Musketeers and the U.S. Seniors Golf Association.

Freeman is survived by his wife, Ruth; daughters, Ruth, Ann, and Carol; two grandsons; sister, Mary Blackwell; brother, James Freeman; and four nieces and a nephew.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 4, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in New Canaan.
