VENICE EAST, Fla. - John H. Ventres, of Venice East, Fla., and former longtime resident of New Canaan, died Saturday, June. 22. He was 92.
Ventres was born March 27, 1921, in Berlin, Conn., to John N. and Ada Hoyt Ventres. With his parents, he moved to New Canaan in 1928 and attended schools there. He was then employed by Hoyt Oil Co. of New Canaan. In 1939, he joined the 192nd Field Artillery of the Connecticut National Guard. As part of the 43rd Division, federalized in 1940, his battery was stationed at Camp Blanding, Fla., and he participated in 1941 in the great Louisiana and Carolina maneuvers. With promotion to sergeant, he was given further training with 155-mm cannon at Fort Still, Okla. He was shipped to England with the 963rd Field Artillery Regiment.
After returning from Europe in 1945, Ventres worked as a carpenter, eventually becoming a carpentry foreman and later construction superintendent at the new Christian Science Church building on Park Street. He became a member of the Rippowam Rifle Club of Stamford, competing in matches at the Lyman Blue Trail Range in Connecticut and the national matches at Camp Perry, Ohio. He moved to Venice East, Fla., with his wife in 1986
Ventres is survived by his brother, George E. Ventres (Doris) of Ridgefield; a grandson; two granddaughters; and two great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Betty; son, Peter; and sister, Lois Ventres Waters.
Ventres will be buried beside his wife in Lakeview Cemetery in New Canaan as a member of the both the VFW and American Legion of Florida.
