NEW CANAAN, Conn. – James H. Sweeney Jr., a resident of New Canaan since 1963, died Oct. 25. He was 93.
Sweeney was born Jan. 24, 1919, in Camden, N.J. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania as an electrical engineer in 1941. He spent four years of active duty with the Army during World War II, including in New Guinea and the Philippines. He was discharged as a captain in the Signal Corps.
Following the war, Sweeney joined General Electric Company, where he worked for 41 years and held various management positions. He retired in 1982 and established Retirement Counseling Foundation Inc., a non-profit public education foundation dedicated to helping individuals plan for retirement.
Sweeney conducted seminars for thousands of people worldwide and developed more than 700 individual financial plans for retirees. He was also a member of the New Canaan Senior Men's Club.
He is survived by three sons, Ret. Col. Robert Naj (Rebecca) Sweeney, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, James H. (Veronica) Sweeney III, of Houston, Texas, and Sean P. Sweeney, of Bittiford, Maine; two daughters, Evelyn S. Voerman, of Cary, N.C., and Charlotte S. Knowlls, of Greer, S.C.; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be held in the spring. Hoyt Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
