Bacon was born Jan. 15, 1917, in New York City, daughter of Channing Price Wiley of Salem, Va., and Corinne (Howell) Wiley of Quogue, N.Y. She was raised in Bernardsville, N.J., and educated at the Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, class of 1934. Upon graduation, she attended the Grand Central Art School in New York City.
Bacon moved to New Canaan from New York City in 1941, after her marriage. She was recruited as a Boy Scouts troop leader, but was soon diverted to writing publicity and news of the Scouts of New Canaan for the New Canaan Advertiser. With E. J. Cyr, a well-known local photographer, she would often cover two or three Scout meetings in an afternoon. She joined a writers’ workshop, and for the next 15 years she wrote poetry and short stories with this group.
Bacon was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, teaching Sunday School for 25 years. In the early 1950‘s she founded an inter-church prayer group which met weekly for many years.
Bacon is survived by her daughters, Susan Leeming (Ned) of Harvard, Mass., Linda Bacon of Des Moines, Iowa, Frances Bacon (Dolf) Furrer of Zurich, Switzerland, Cynthia Nelson (Richard) of Rhinebeck, N.Y.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Edwin Lex Bacon.
A memorial service for Bacon will be held Sunday, June 2, at 2 p.m at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.
