Women's Group Presents Talk On End Of Life Issues In New Canaan

NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- The American Association of University Women is hosting a discussion of growing interest to the public covering End of Life Issues by speakers Paula Bruns and Katherine Silvan on Thursday, Nov. 12, at 9:30 a.m. at the Waveny House in New Canaan, 677 South Ave.

Bruns has been hospice community liaison and hospice volunteer coordinator for Masonicare Home Health and Hospice for 10 years. In this role, she works with families and physicians regarding end of life care. She also spends time in the community offering educational programs in Hospice and Palliative Care to the general public.

Silvan is an ordained interfaith minister and master of social work. She was ordained at the Cathedral of St.John the Divine through the New Seminary, the oldest interfaith seminary in the world.

The speakers will discuss the choices we all have at the end of life for our loved ones, as well as the differences between hospice and palliative care. The decision to refer a person to hospice is often perceived negatively or delayed because many view this as a medical failure when it is a fact of life.

The first hospice in the United States was actually started in Connecticut by Yale in 1971.
