Woman Hit by Van on South Avenue

A Norwalk man was arrested after allegedly losing control of his van and hitting a female pedestrian from Darien on Thursday afternoon on South Avenue.

Police said Daniel J. DeRosa, 26, of Norwalk, was heading north on South Avenue at about 12:54 p.m. when he clipped another vehicle at South Avenue and Bank Street and lost control of his van, which belongs to a swimming pool company. The van hit a street sign and the woman, who is in her 30s, while she stood on the sidewalk.

Sgt. Carol Ogrinc said it was not clear whether the van hit the sign or the woman first. The woman suffered leg injuries and was taken by the New Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps to a local hospital for treatment. Police said a man at the scene managed to safeguard a boy who was walking with him and the woman.

Police were not certain how DeRosa lost control of his vehicle. Before the wreck, police received calls about the van being driven erratically.

DeRosa is charged with driving under the influence, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Other charges are pending, Ogrinc said.

He posted a $500 bond and was released. He will appear in Norwalk Superior Court on Sept. 22.
