White Geese Make Home In New Canaan's Mead Park

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – If you have visited Mead Park in New Canaan recently, your eyes were not fooling you.

Six white geese are now taking up space in the park along with the darker Canada geese, which have visited the park for several years.

The white geese have been in the park for about two months, New Canaan Animal Control Officer Mary Ann Kleinschmitt said. She suspects someone dumped them in the park.

“These animals didn’t just fly over there,” she said.

The geese stand out and tend to stay together while keeping their distance from the Canada geese. They appear to be domesticated, too, Kleinschmitt said, because they are not intimidated by humans and aren't afraid to approach a person. Animal control has been monitoring one of the geese, who has a bad foot.

Kleinschmitt doesn’t know who left them but said rabbits and baby chicks that were originally pets have been left in Mead Park in the past.  

“The town has had problems with this before," she said. "It’s not new.”

Kleinschmitt now has the mission of finding homes for the geese before winter arrives as they cannot survive the cold weather like Canada geese. She cannot take them and place them in an animal shelter like she does with recovered cats and dogs.

“I hope we can get someone who’s interested,” she said.
