NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- A Walgreen's worker was honored for his alertness, which helped lead the New Canaan Police to make an arrest in a fraud case.

Terry Darden, 59, a Norwalk resident, was given a Civilian Service Award by police in a ceremony Monday, Dec. 15, for his role in helping police arrest two men wanted for fraud.

"I'm honored," Darden said of the award. "We've got such a great boss. He bends over backwards for me and the crew, and we do the same."

Darden was working at Walgreen's on Sept. 28 when he noticed two men acting suspiciously at about 8:35 p.m. in the store.

After noticing noticed that the transaction at the nearby cash register was taking too long, Darden walked by the customers. One of the customers eyed him suspiciously, prompting him to call to police, he said.

When New Canaan police officers arrived, they checked out the two men and discovered they were wanted in other jurisdictions on charges of fraud. Officers then arrested the two men.

"When you see something you say something. That's all I did. I saw something that wasn't right and I said something. It just makes me feel good," he said.

Darden, who also works as a crossing guard in New Canaan and at Staples in Norwalk, also said he takes pride in the fact he may have prevented additional crimes from being committed against unsuspecting victims.

New Canaan Police Chief Leon Krolikowski praised Darden for his alertness and his civic mindedness.

"Terry, thank you for helping us stop crime in New Canaan," Krolikowski said during the ceremony. "Thank you for being such a hard working member of community who is not afraid of getting involved in order to help others."
