Wagner Pleads for End to Rancor

Christine Wagner issued a call for an end to personal attacks in the mean-spirited debate over the town's controversial master plan as a town council member said a "witch hunt" was under way and a member of a planning group resigned.

"We're going to disagree. But when things start to get personal and people start to feel attacked, it's never a good position to be in," said Wagner, co-chair of the Town Center Planning Group. "I'm happy to have a conversation with anyone about any aspect of this, but let's talk about the facts."

Criticism is mounting on the proposed master plan, which includes the future of Town Hall and the New Canaan Library. Several residents have bashed the plan, saying it wastes tax dollars and duplicates previous studies. The Board of Finance approved $25,000 Tuesday for a first phase of work.

And now the planning group is now a member short. Michael Hobbs resigned from the committee Wednesday. First Selectman Jeb Walker said Hobbs' decision was based on personal attacks leveled at him about his involvement.

Wagner said she's "disappointed" in how some residents have behaved.

"Clearly, there are people who are angry about what's happening. (But) I don't see how you can be angry about planning something," Wagner said.

Town Council members were surprised to hear of the resignation and expressed regret over Hobbs' resignation. Council member Tucker Murphy said during Wednesday's meeting that she had seen emails critical of the planning group. "I am very, very concerned about the witch hunt that really is going on right now," Murphy said.

Council members had praise for the planning group members. "I hope that you all are willing to continue with the process and I look forward to very positive recommendations," Peggy Young said.
