Town to Buy Police Car, Fix Bridge

The Board of Selectmen unanimously approved several additions to New Canaan's fleet of vehicles Tuesday. They also approved requests for bridge repairs, sidewalk construction and road improvements. First Selectman Jeb Walker and Selectmen Sally Hines and Robert Mallozzi said yes to a contract for $23,465 with McMahon Ford for the addition of a new police car. The board also listened to concerns about the S.W.A.T and animal control vehicles in addition to a number of aging patrol cars.

"We have to find the happy medium in the end that's going to work financially for the town and allow the chief to protect New Canaan," said Bill Oestmann, administrative superintendent of the Department of Public Works and the town's fleet manager. The board advised Oestmann to continue researching the costs and benefits of a larger-scale upgrade to the fleet.

Oestmann earned the board's approval to enter contracts to buy a small dump truck and pickup truck for the DPW. The board also approved repairs to the Mariomi Road Bridge over the Silvermine River, sidewalk construction that will add two parking spaces on Locust Avenue and the sealing of pavement cracks in streets and parking lots around town.
