Town Pauses to Remember 9/11

Stephanie Moore's bagpipe rendition of "Amazing Grace" echoed loudly in front of New Canaan Town Hall, reflecting the pain people remember from Sept. 11, 2001. "It was such an incredibly horrible day. It's something that needs to be recognized," said Moore, a member of the New Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

More than 60 people gathered Friday in front of Town Hall for a ceremony remembering the victims of the terror attacks. Residents, town employees and emergency services personnel observed moments of silence, prayed and thought about the horrific scenes that played out nine years ago in New York City, Washington, D.C. and Shanksville, Pa.

First Selectman Jeb Walker said the pain of the day and the loss of people from New Canaan and elsewhere will always be remembered. While most Americans will attend remembrance events on the actual anniversary date, town employee Sal DeLucia thought it was important for New Canaan to have its own ceremony to honor the victims as well as the military personnel fighting to defend the U.S.

"This gives us a chance to be here," said DeLucia, who works in the town's information technology department. "I don't know if people will be going to [New York] tomorrow. It's good for us to take a half-hour out of our day."

The service included the placing of a wreath at the town hall flagpole and Nancy Upton of the New Haven Volunteer Ambulance Corps singing "God Bless America."
