NEW CANAAN, Conn. Sydney Lewis Greenberg, a freelance photographer and longtime New Canaan resident, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, at Gaylord Specialty Healthcare in Wallingford. He was 92. Greenberg was at the Wallingford facility recovering from an Oct. 11 car accident.
Born Nov. 7, 1919, in New York City, Greenberg was a graduate of Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn, N.Y. He and his wife, Beverly Eisman Greenberg, were married for 68 years. He was a New Canaan legend, having served as the photographer for the New Canaan Police Department, the New Canaan Fire Department and the New Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps as well as a contributing photographer to the New Canaan Advertiser. In addition to being a freelance photographer for more than four decades, Greenberg ran the B&W darkroom at Weiman & Lester Photoservices and Photorama in Manhattan and Stamford. His stock photography was represented by both PhotoResearchers and FPG.
During World War II, Greenberg was sergeant in the 164th Signal Corps deployed in China with the Chinese National Army. His World War II photographs were recently featured in a Chinese traveling museum exhibit honoring American involvement in that war. Greenberg's pictures were also featured in an article for DEEP magazine in China. He also served New Canaan as a justice of the peace for more than 40 years. Recently, many of his images from town events were donated to the New Canaan Historical Society.
In addition to his wife, Greenberg is survived by two sons, David L. Greenberg and his wife, Laurie, of Beverly, Mass., and Philip J. Greenberg and his wife, Jamie, of Brooklyn; and four grandchildren.
The funeral service will be private, followed by burial with full military honors in Beth Moses Cemetery in Farmingdale, N.Y. The Greenberg family is planning a public memorial service in the spring in New Canaan. Arrangements will be announced at a later date.
